Happy New Year!

Happy New Years everyone! Today’s review is on the book Monument 14 by Emmy Laybourne.

Set in apocalyptic Colorado, Laybourne creates an intriguing story about survival, determination, and collaboration. There are fourteen elementary and high school students trapped in a local supermarket while the world outside their door is literally falling to pieces. Aside from surviving dangerous chemical leaks, massive natural disasters, and other issues the outside world presents, these kids have to learn to work together to create a place to live.

I thought that this novel had a great story and was an interesting take on an apocalyptic society, however, it wasn’t written as well as it could have been. While reading, I felt like Layourne had been trying too hard. Her sentences were very short, but she always tried to incorporate some higher level vocabulary. Also, the characters did not really develop into something other than the people you meet in the first chapter. At the same time, the ending was pretty surprising, so it was a good book overall.
